HiSet Teacher – 5451 – Catholic Charities of Boston

High School Equivalency Teacher for the Haitian Multi Service Center program in Dorchester. The HiSet Teacher is, formerly the GED high school equivalency test preparation to out-of-school youth within the Young Parent Education Program. The HiSET Teacher will ensure that the learning environment is progressive and enriching through engaging youth with challenging routines and goals. All classroom activities, lesson planning, and extra-curricular activities will be based on individual student needs for the purpose of helping them to obtain a HiSET and pursue their career and college interests. The HiSET Teacher will be responsible for teaching Math, Writing, Reading, Social Studies and Science at the High-School level to a classroom with students of diverse grade levels and prior educational. The essential functions include; Prepare curriculum for subjects and implement it. Develop materials and select books to be used in the class. Teach assigned subjects, including computerized curriculum. Provide academic counseling to assigned students and work to engage them in the learning process. Meet weekly with staff to discuss students’ progress in the areas of math, science, writing, reading and social studies. Oversee, document and confer with students about their progress toward their HiSET. Work in collaboration with the program director in assessing program applicants with respect to their education goals. Develop and improve curriculum as necessary to meet the needs of the students. Attend supervision and internal and external meetings and trainings as required. Other related responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications include A BA/BS with teaching experience is required. Massachusetts certification is a plus. A Masters degree is preferred. A minimum of 2-3 years of experience working with at-risk youth is essential. The ability to teach math, writing, social studies, science and reading at the high school level is required. Bilingual in Spanish and English is preferred, but not necessary. The ideal individual must be able to work with people of all ethnic, cultural, social and economic backgrounds. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and flexibility to address tasks as needed. Attention to detail and good organizational skills are required. A knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite with experience in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, internet, Google and other technology resources such as Skype, mobile phone applications, etc. will be required A demonstrated ability to work as part of an educational and social support team will also be required..
