On Monday, Governor Maura Healey filed a supplemental budget bill requesting emergency funding through the end of FY2023 for programs that provide vital supports to vulnerable children and families. These requests include:
- $45 million for Emergency Assistance Family Shelters and Service
- $40 million for a reserve to address the needs of families and individuals experiencing homelessness, including supports to school districts to support such students
- $65 million for universal school meals through the School Breakfast Program
- $130 million in emergency funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program as a step-down from enhanced support provided during the pandemic
Food and housing insecurity are significant contributors to family instability and threats to child safety and well-being. These investments provide an important safety net to families and would give the Administration and Legislature time to craft longer-term solutions in the next budget cycle.
