Communications & Public Policy Specialist

Who We Are:

The Children’s League of Massachusetts (CLM) is a statewide non-profit association of private and public organizations and individuals that collectively advocate for public policies and quality services that are in the best interest of the Commonwealth’s children, youth, and families. It is through public education and advocacy that CLM promotes the availability, accessibility, and quality of these needed services. During this time of major shifts in the delivery and funding of children, youth, and family services, CLM serves as a forum for the exchange of information and ideas among members, a vehicle for keeping the focus on the needs of children, youth, and their families, and a powerful source of common action. CLM works independently and in coalition around these critical areas to advance public policy in Massachusetts by developing and advocating for passage of needed legislation, analyzing the state budget and its effects on children and families, and promoting policy within the administration. CLM also works to educate both the public and policymakers about national trends and pressing state-wide issues regarding the child welfare system.

What You Would Do:

The Communications and Public Policy Specialist will work with the CLM team to advance CLM’s public policy agenda and raise the public profile of CLM and its members.  This position will require the ability to build and sustain relationships with CLM’s membership, CLM partner organizations, members and staff of the Executive Branch, the State Legislature and media outlets. The successful candidate will have exceptional communication skills including writing and social media, the ability to manage their time and workload while maintaining high quality, and an interest in issues that affect children and families.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with Executive Director and staff to develop and implement a communication strategy to raise CLM’s public profile, advance CLM’s public policy goals; and maintain CLM’s branding and voice;
  • Develop and maintain an annual social media strategy and editorial calendar to ensure consistent and timely dissemination of content;
  • Promote CLM and partner events, including meetings, legislative hearings, conferences, events, workshops, and other information from members including job openings and other postings as needed; support internal and external events by providing social media coverage, capturing photos, videos, etc. and posting real-time content;
  • Actively manage CLM’s social media accounts (e.g., Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn); and collaborate with other staff to create and regularly post important news and actions items; respond to comments/messaging when needed;
  • Stay up to date with emerging news relevant to CLM and our members;
  • Manage creation and distribution of regular member newsletters and Friends of CLM newsletters;
  • Maintain the CLM website to ensure timely updates on advocacy, job postings from members, latest news and other relevant information;
  • Design graphics, invitations, event flyers, notices, fact sheets, reports, and similar materials for social media and other CLM materials;
  • Support development and dissemination of written materials, including legislation, testimony, research briefs, memos, white papers, fact sheets, presentations, and other materials as needed;
  • Collect quantitative and qualitative data analytics from social media, website, and email distribution networks; create reports, analyze data, and  recommend and implement changes, where necessary;
  • Other duties as assigned.

What Will Allow You to Excel in This Position:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in communications, political science, public policy, public health, or other relevant area of study. A degree may also be substituted by 5+ years of demonstrated and relevant work experience in one or more of the above arenas.
  • 1-3 years of work experience in communications, policy, government, customer relations, or a related field;
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills;
  • Expertise with effective communication and marketing campaign practices on social media;
  • Ability to work with diverse populations;
  • Ability to work as part of a team;
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently;
  • Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple concurrent tasks while maintaining high quality and strong attention to detail;
  • Experience or proficiency using Microsoft Office software, including Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, WordPress, Canva or similar design software, and social media platforms;
  • Access to reliable transportation and be able to travel to regular meetings and other events around the state not located on public transportation;
  • Some knowledge of the state legislative and budget processes is helpful but not required.

What This Position Offers:

  • This is a full-time (40 hour/week) exempt position, FSLA exempt
  • Reports to the Executive Director
  • Annual salary range of $45,000-$55,000, commensurate with experience
