Massachusetts Bans Child Marriage

This week Governor Baker and the Legislature enacted the ban on child marriage with language adopted in the FY2023 budget. This success came about through a years-long effort led by the national organization Unchained at Last and the Massachusetts Coalition to End Child Marriage, of which CLM has been an active member since 2016.

The adopted budget language also creates important protection for children under the age of 18 who are currently trapped in a marriage by ensuring that “any minor who is married may avail themself of all legal remedies and relief that would otherwise be available if they were not a minor” including the ability to initiate proceedings for divorce or annulment, and to seek protective orders.

CLM is thrilled to have achieved this win in partnership with the Massachusetts Coalition to End Child Marriage, Representative Kay Khan, Senator Harriette Chandler, and other legislative champions.
