In March 2025, The Children's League of Massachusetts (CLM) and The Rhode Island Coalition for Children and Families (RICCF) hosted a practice and policy symposium. The event was dedicated to celebrating, listening to, and advocating for LGBTQIA+ youth and families. The event was held in Worcester, Massachusetts at Clark University.
Executive Summary
This symposium is held in a time where protections for LGBTQIA+ youth are under attack. The need for a safe space for youth and advocates to gather and share celebrations, concerns, and policy strategies is apparent.
There were three panels who shared their expertise on LGBTQIA+ youth support and advocacy. The national panel members included leaders from GLAD Law, ACLU, and The Trevor Project. State panelists included state agency leaders in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Lastly, our lived experience panel included youth who identify as members of the LGBTQIA+ community and/or have lived experience in the child welfare system.
Several messages were made clear throughout the symposium:
1) We should not comply with baseless and harmful directives when not compelled by law. Both of our states are taking all possible action to protect the rights and preserve services for LGBTQIA+ youth.
2) Uplifting LGBTQIA+ youth voice is vital in continuing progress our states in ensuring all young people are cared for and supported.
3) Supporting staff and family of all backgrounds begins with the creation of a safe space for productive conversation.
We are thankful to host dedicated advocates who are eager to support the drive for equity for LGBTQIA+ youth.
